Why Forklift Fork & Chain Inspections Matter

Celebrating Forklift Safety in June

Forklifts need regular attention to stay safe and reliable. With June being Annual Safety Month, it's the perfect time to focus on two forklift components that are often overlooked: forks and fork chains.

Even a small crack or worn chain can lead to a big accident. Stay ahead of the risk with these tips.

Forklift Fork Safety Starts with Daily Habits

OSHA requires that any fork showing defects be removed from service immediately. Daily checks should be part of every operator’s routine, with an in-depth inspection at least once a year by a qualified technician.

Here’s what to look for in Your Daily or Shift-End Checklist

  • Are there surface cracks in the fork?
  • Is the positioning lock working properly?
  • Are the fork markings still readable?
  • Do the hooks show any wear?
  • Is the blade or shank worn? Is it bent?
  • Is the fork angle from blade to shank straight?
  • Are the blades and shanks straight?
  • Is there any noticeable height difference between fork tips?

Fork Thickness Matters

Use calipers to measure the thickness. If the forks are worn down by 10%, load capacity is cut by 20%—increasing the risk of sudden failure. ANSI standards require forks to be replaced once they reach 90% of their original thickness for the safety of the operator and the facility.

Fork Chain Wear Can Be Dangerous

Fork chains are critical to lifting safely. Over time, the joints wear out, especially when they are under heavy use. It is just as important to inspect fork chains on a regular basis. Never ignore a chain that’s been used beyond the forklift’s rated capacity.

Inspection Guidelines

  • Every 200 hours, inspect and lubricate the lift chains.
  • Check for elongation. If a chain has stretched by 3% or more, replace it.
  • Look for rust, cracked plates or any signs of corrosion.
